British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Documentary Deemed a 'Significant' Violation of Media Regulations, Says Broadcasting Watchdog

The BBC engaged in a "significant breach" of media regulations by omitting to mention that the narrator of a programme about Gaza was the son of a Hamas representative, as determined by UK media regulator Ofcom.

An investigation by the media regulator into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the film was "substantially inaccurate".

The BBC's director general had earlier expressed regret, saying there had been "a significant failing in relation to accuracy".

The authority has ordered the BBC to transmit a peak-time announcement about its conclusions.

"As this represents a significant violation of our rules, we are directing the corporation to transmit a announcement of our determinations against it on the BBC's second channel at nine o'clock in the evening, with a timing to be finalised," the statement read.

'Risk to Erode Confidence'

The watchdog's statement stated: "The inquiry we conducted concluded that the programme's lack of disclosure that the presenter's father occupied a position in the Hamas-administered administration was substantially inaccurate.

"This implied that the audience did not have vital facts which may have been extremely pertinent to their assessment of the narrator and the details he provided.

"Confidence is at the heart of the connection between a television network and its public, notably for a state-funded media outlet such as the British Broadcasting Corporation.

"This error had the risk to undermine the very considerable levels of credibility that the public would have placed in a documentary produced by the BBC about the Israel-Gaza war."

The documentary was pulled from the BBC's streaming service in February after the presenter's personal associations emerged, and in the month of July an internal BBC review concluded it violated the broadcaster's journalistic standards on truthfulness.

A corporation official commented: "The authority's determination is in line with the findings of the internal assessment, that there was a serious error in the programme in relation to the corporation's content standards on accuracy, which corresponds to Rule 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.

"We issued an apology for this and we accept the regulator's ruling in complete. We will follow the penalty as soon as the schedule and language are finalised."
