Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
