Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
